ONE WEEK "INTRODUCTION TO FURNITURE RESTORATION .
This is man is David Battle, he is a rare individual. David is one of this countries most skilled and accomplished furniture restorer’s. He has been a member of the British Antique Furniture Restoration Association. ( B.A.F.R.A. ) for the past 18 years, a man with 26 years experience has a professional furniture restorer. David is a rarity in having trained two other full BAFRA members. David was also one of the team of furniture restorer’s recently called upon by the Foriegn Office to refurbish the furniture at the British Embassy in Washington. With all this knowledge and experience you will be assured of getting the right answers to your questions.

This is an intensive five day course which aims to provide the knowledge base from which a beginner can start to learn the practical and theoretical techniques need to be able to restore quality antique furniture to a professional standard.
You are welcome to bring small items of your own to work on, but we will provide good quality period furniture to restore. Five days may not be long enough for a beginner to complete their own restoration project but we aim to equip you with the skill and knowledge to complete projects in your own time.
Throughout the five days David will also demonstrate a complete restoration to professional standard
You will have your own bench and we can supply tools. There will be a maximum of three students and you will receive individual and group tuition. If you have specific techniques you want to learn or improve we will do our best to help you.
Practical techniques David will teach you during this week.
Knowledge Base
Throughout the five days course there will be an on going emphasis on the theoretical knowledge need to restore quality furniture. We can teach some of the many the skills, but just as important is to learn how and when to apply the different techniques you will be learning. We want you to leave being able to identify the age and purpose of a piece of furniture. How it was made, how it has aged and how it has been previously repaired. Most importantly how you should approach the restoration process in a manner that is appropriate and respectful of the furniture.
Being at Rowden will show how you furniture is made. Only by thoroughly understanding the making can you begin to understand how to approach repair
Throughout the five day course David will also present the morning Dimbelbies on an aspect of furniture history to all the students at Rowden
It takes many years to learn all the aspects of restoration and unfortunately we cannot teach you experience. However there are basic skills and knowledge that you need to know and get right from the outset. This is what we can show you.
So that you still feel supported after you leave we want to offer an extra service. For one year afterwards David Battle will be available for advice and consultation over the internet. This means we can look at pictures and discuss the best way to approach jobs, where to source materials and answer questions
For those of you who have completed the one week course we will also offer the opportunity for further training with David Battle in his own workshop. This will provide an opportunity to see how a professional workshop works. You can improve your core skills, tackle more complex repairs and begin to look at other aspects of restoration such as carving, gilding, wood turning, brasswork and ormolu and lock repair.
