" Black is the colour"
The phone rang, it always rings when I am putting glue on something
tender and irreplaceable.“My name is Ann Black, I am looking for a
dining table, we are moving into a new “Barn Conversion” and we have
seen your website and wondered if you could help. “I will try….. “. “We
want a centre piece, something right in the middle of a huge wooden
beamed, stone flagged, brick built room about forty feet high. We want
something modern because the building is brand new but also uses old
natural materials. Oh, and the kids have got to be able to chuck their
satchels on it and not worry too much about it.”
That is how it began, I met Ann and her husband Tom and talked and got
on and then there were chairs. “Oh Love Chairs can we have them as side
chairs down the..... More

"Table for Daniela"
“I need a table” she said, “Oh yes.” I replied not quite switched on yet, “Its to go in my apartment and to sit in front of this modern sculpture I have by Anish Kapoor” “ Oh Yeeees…. that does sound interesting” I said. Daniela had been recommend to call me by a fellowmember of the Society of Designer Craftsmen a potter I met at one of the exhibitions, and I must remember to buy him a drink when I see him next. Daniela we chatted and we arranged to meet at her apartment when
we were next both in town. It helps me to both meet the client and see the place the piece will live. Sometimes people are surprised that I will travel so far to meet someone “on spec” I know that we are both taking a risk here. As this whole process is ...... More

"LinenFold Sideboard"
About fifteen years ago I made a cabinet called “The Linenfold Cabinet” It was for a wonderful client who should really be the Godmother of my children, for her work over the years has put food in their mouths and clothes on their back . Diana has always over the past twenty years or so had a piece being made for her, but this is not about her . Tom and Ann one of my present clients saw the photo of her piece, saw the way it caught the light, side lit from a large glass window and asked if we could develop that idea. Their idea was sound for they too have a side lit situation to place a sideboard against. Their room is a great deal larger than Dianas, and they wanted me to echo another piece I had made for them on the other side of the room, a sort of brother sister design, slightly oriental, peaceful bags of repose They also liked a blond sideboard I had done in the 90s so I set off again.
All my pieces are unique in that they are never repeated at least not by me, they evolve I develop designs over the years as my clients take me here and there and my own low boredom threshold pushes me to doing new designs.

"Dianas Cabinet"
This is the lady who has done so much to feed and clothe my children at a time when I really needed clients. This is the latest of a line of pieces that I have made for Diana over the years. She gets the best out of me I suppose by giving me a freedom which is in itself inspirational.

"John and Fenella fireside chairs"
This shows two sketches of a pair of chairs that we are making for a local client. The idea is that the chairs are his and hers, Fenellas will wrap around her being snuggy and comfortable, Johns chair is a proper mans chair more bare bones and solid wood. The two chairs have their similarities they are not the same chair more they are developed from each other, perhaps like we can all develop as human being from the influence of our partner.
