David Savage

The Drawings

This is David Savage, he been a master artist craftsman now for over 35 years. Way back in the late 1960s he trained to be an artist, first reading Fine Art at Ruskin School at University of Oxford. Then a three year period of study at The Royal Academy Schools in London. "I was lucky, at a time when the art schools were destroying their own skill base, tearing out drawing studios replacing them with "mid atlantic expressionism" I learnt how to draw, how to really use my eyes."The Ruskin School and the Royal Academy Schools are two of Europes oldest most distinguished art colleges in the world. And I owe them a huge debt of gratitude".

David learnt his cabinetmaking a little later in two commercial workshops in Spitalfields, London, where he paid the principals for the privilege of working there and learning in a commercial situation. It is to a great degree this experience of learning in a real working situation that he now passes on to his students. Not a school or college, but an "Atalier" where everyone from master craftsman through journeyman, to apprentice is learning at different levels and from each other.

David focuses on working with small group of clients.

David Savage is one of the most inspiring and innovative artist craftsmen of his generation. His work is collected throughout the world and the products of his small select workshop are sought after by private clients world wide. However you can no longer easily buy Davids furniture it is only available direct from his workshop in Devon and prospective clients will unfortunately be asked to wait for delivery of their piece for some time.
