As you may or may not know something about me I will begin by telling you a little about myself. My name is David Savage and I have been a cabinetmaker and furniture designer now for over 25 years. I wasn't always going to be a furniture maker. I trained to be an artist, a painter, reading Fine Art at Ruskin School Oxford University. I followed this with a by a Post-Graduate degree at the Royal Academy Schools in London. The Royal Academy Schools is Europes oldest and one of the most distinguished art colleges in the world.
I learnt my cabinetmaking a little later in two commercial workshops in Spitalfields, London, where I paid the principals for the privilege of working there and learning in a commercial situation. It is to a great degree this experience of learning in a real working situation that I pass on to my students. Not a school or college but an "Atalier" where everyone from master craftsman through journeyman to apprentice is learning at different levels and from each other.
Thaey also benefit from seeing the very special work that my small team of skilled makers do for my clients. We make special furniture here, unique, genuine luxury for special clients.
Are we any good?
In all modesty, yes. I was elected to Membership of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in 1983 and in 1989 to the Fellowship of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. I am a Freeman of the Worshipfull Company of Furnituremakers and until 2008 will be a member of the Selection and Election Committee of the Devon Guild.
I have exhibited in many countries and my furniture workshop has been selected as one of the top 20 workshops in the United Kingdom to be included in the book 'Furniture for the 21st Century' that has recently been published in Europe and the United States.
