This solid Rosewood gauge is made to an ancient design without a clamping knob. The simple two part gauge is fixed by twisting the stock on the stem. The eccentric form of the stem then locks in the stock, making for a simple, accurate and easy to use gauge. A sharp marking gauge like this is essential for accurate work to proceed.
In a woodworking workshop, we all need about four or six gauges some to leave set up and some to adjust to new work. We also need gauges that have pins filed to “Inside” and “Outside” bevels. We have done this here by setting up the gauge to scribe a fine line both with the grain and across the grain. At the other end of the stock is a hole for a pencil making this a very versatile accurate hand tool.
To sharpen the pin use a small saw file one or two strokes will create a keen edge
